King Kamehameha Hula Competition Hula Kahiko Ancient Dance
This Hula Competition is sponsored by the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage. It is held in honor of King Kamehameha, the first King of the Hawaiian Nation.
There are two nights of performances. This program contains the 'Kahiko' & 'Oli' Divisions of Hula. 'Kahiko' is ancient style of dancing performed by halau, (hula troupe). The 'Oli' is a chant competition where men & women give solo performances. Our special guest 'Oli' is Tangaroa Teamaru Ariki, a chanter from the Cook Islands.
Hula Kahiko is traditional dancing and a serious art form. Our program contains some examples of 'Classic Hawaiian Folk Art'.
