Exploring WW2 Concrete Barges on the Manchester Ship Canal

During World War II, when steel was in short supply, engineers turned to alternative materials to take its place. In Britain, huge concrete barges became commonplace. On the Manchester Ship Canal, concrete barges were used for shifting goods from one ship to another, speeding up the turnaround of the bigger vessels. Following the war, they had no scrap value and so were abandoned. Today 3 remain on a dead arm of the River Mersey just outside of Lymm.

Joined by Lewis from Ringway Manchester, we decided to take a kayaking trip up the Mersey from Woolston and then onto the Ship Canal to find these concrete relics.
