Q) Hey, the HiFi Vintage website you showed states the Barclaytophone was made by Clarville in France.
A) That’s an advert from a HiFi retailer trying to sell something they know little about. They’ve got their information wrong. The Barclaytophone was made in Japan by Toshiba. Japan is printed on the back of the device and all articles from the time state this particular machine was commissioned from Toshiba, as the OEM. In the US it was sold as the Music Swinger and branded as ABC and for France it was intended to be branded as Barclay. I didn’t mention the misinformation shown in that advert to avoid confusion. Clarville don’t factor into this one at all.

Q) Could the French language have something to do with Canada?
A) Nope. Barclay were responsible for launching the Pocket Disc in France. Americom were responsible for the US - but they only got as far as Seattle & Detroit before the business closed. Toshiba were responsible for Japan. A Canada launch would likely have followed at some point - but this hadn’t been planned for at the time the operation collapsed. Canadian residents also tell me that Japanese made electronics sold in Canada traditionally have English language labelling, the same as in the US.

Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.
