In earlier days, people would follow social distancing to drive the negative energy away. We can literally feel the negative energy like heaviness in body, lack of interest. Negative energy surrounds us in physical and non-physical forms, so it's important to always be mindful that you can be affected by the different energetic exchanges you have as you navigate throughout your day. When you have a protective shield of your own energy surrounding you, you are less likely to be affected by someone else. You find yourself face to face with someone who is radiating negative energy. Maybe it's your co-worker who comes to the office with an aura of exhaustion, or maybe it's an old college friend who still seems to be simmering on something that happened between you years ago. Evil eye-effects (transfer from one person to other by a look) is also one of the reason.

Shri Gurudeva explains, if a wife- disrespects, doesn't take good care, talk ill, puts false promises on her husband, then giving sumangali items to such woman would lead to negative energy attraction.
Same applies to gents. If a male has an extra marital affair, bad habit addictions, has bad friends, cheats and puts false promises, then being with such persons damages our aura. Our soul/Atma gets blocked when we are with negative people.
The negative energy can block one's mind, makes one inactive, induces negative thoughts. This is described in Rudrayamala tantrasaara.

To open the mind, activate the organs, to keep yourself healthy- do parayana, japa, service to society, service to cows and service to the guru.
