Is the host completely down or just unreachable?
First determine the failure type.
❌ No response at all
No ping
No iLO/iDRAC/console access
➡️ Likely power, hardware, or boot issue
⚠️ Console works but network is down
Can log in locally
No ping / WAC / RDP
➡️ Likely NIC, VLAN, teaming, or switch issue
⚠️ Host up but VMs are down
➡️ Likely Hyper-V services, storage, or cluster issue
2️⃣ Physical & out-of-band checks (ALWAYS first)
If available:
iDRAC / iLO / IPMI
Check:
Power state
Hardware alerts (disk, PSU, NIC)
Boot errors
Reboot only if no active workloads
👉 If server won’t power on → hardware ticket
3️⃣ Local console access (Hyper-V Core)
Log in directly or via console.
Check system uptime
systeminfo | findstr /i "Boot Time"
Check disk space (very common)
Get-PSDrive
🚨 If C: is full → Hyper-V WILL break
4️⃣ Verify network connectivity
Check NICs
Get-NetAdapter
Look for:
Status = Up
Correct speed
No “Disconnected”
If NIC Teaming is used
Get-NetLbfoTeam
Get-NetLbfoTeamMember
Common issues:
Team shows Degraded
Wrong active NIC after switch change
Check IP config
ipconfig /all
Confirm:
Correct IP
Correct VLAN
Gateway present
5️⃣ Test basic co
ping gateway
