Here's a comparison of two of the most popular Alcohol Stove fuels on the market today.
Denatured Alcohol, otherwise known as Paint Thinner is an excellent choice of fuel for the Alcohol Stove since it burns well, leaves no carbon residue and is very affordable.
HEET, normally used as a gas line antifreeze can also be used to fuel the alcohol stove. HEET also leaves no residue, burns cleanly and it very low cost.
I put both of these fuels up against one another to see which would outperform or if they both boiled water at the same rate.
Test conditions:
16 ounces of water at starting temp of 65F
Fancy Feast Alcohol Stove
Tomato Paste Can Insert and Carbon Felt wicking
Water Temp Data at each Minute:
1:00 - 87F
2:00 - 107F
3:00 - 130F
4:00 - 162F
5:00 - 176F
6:00 - 193F
7:00 - 208F
7:22 - Official Boil
Had I been in the field with no temperature sensor, I would have called the boil at 7:05. My previous boil test under the same conditions but with Denatured Alcohol had water boiling at 6:22.
