It was Labor Day, 1996. Houston was in town for a pivotal three-game series. The Cardinals, who had won three straight, had pretty much owned the Astros in head-to-head matchups up to this point, but still trailed in the division by 1.5 games.
After making a misplay in the first inning that led to three runs, Willie McGee did all he could offensively to make up for it, going 4-5, and driving in three runs, including the game winner in the 10th. The Cardinals would go on to sweep the Astros, and including the sweep of Colorado that preceded this series, would wind up willing 10 of 11, propelling them to the NL Central title.
Also of note, Ozzie Smith connected off of future Cardinals ace Darryl Kile for the final home run of his career in the 4th inning.
