UNICEF's Jonathan Crickx reports from Deir al-Balah, located in the central Gaza Strip, where Palestinians gather to fill jerry cans with clean, drinkable water from a UNICEF-supported desalination plant.
More than 19 months of intense bombing have caused a severe breakdown in water and sanitation services, impacting over 2.2 million people.
Most of Gaza's water systems have been heavily damaged or are non-operational, reducing water production capacity to just 5 percent of normal levels. This situation has forced many to rely on unsafe water sources, significantly increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
"Today, we are more and more lacking fuel to run this plant, but also to run those trucks that are bringing the water to the communities," says Crickx. "This has a direct impact on the health of the children. They are drinking improper water, which is affecting their kidneys and which is affecting their entire health."
