Pterosaurs, the flying reptiles of the Mesozoic Age, had a tremendous range of sizes, from little species with less than a meter of wingspan to giants with wingspans comparable to the size of today's aircraft. The smallest pterosaurs, like Anurognathus, had about 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) of wingspan and were probably insectivores who fluttered through ancient forests. Somewhat larger ones such as Pterodactylus and Rhamphorhynchus measured wingspans of 1 to 1.8 meters (3.3 to 6 feet) and are some of the oldest known pterosaurs.

As pterosaurs developed, they grew to enormous sizes. Dsungaripterus and Tapejara had wing spans of about 3.5 to 5 meters (11 to 16 feet) and were known for Tapejara's amazingly large head crest. Pteranodon, perhaps the most well-known of all pterosaurs, had a wingspan of about 7 meters (23 feet) and probably rode over Cretaceous oceans, snatching up fish.

The real titans of pterosaur domination were the members of the family azhdarchids, one of the greatest of the flier giants all the way out of all times. Quetzalcoatlus northropi, Hatzegopteryx thambema, and Arambourgiania philadelphiae shared an approximate wing length between 10 and 12 meters (33 and 39 feet) and are equivalent in size to small planes. They stood tall, like giraffes on land, reaching between 4.6 to 5 meters (15 to 16 feet) in height. Their long toothless beak and muscular legs indicate they might have been land-hunting creatures, hunting for their prey on the ground before flying off to catch it in mid-air.

Although the exact sizes of these pterosaurs remain debated due to incomplete fossils, they represent the pinnacle of flying reptile evolution, dominating prehistoric skies until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period.
