PHILMONT 2021 | PHILMONT'S MOST HISTORIC CAMP | DAY 8 ON TRAIL

July 22, 2021 - Today we hiked 8 miles from Baldy Skyline to Copper Park. We were treated one of the best sunrises on the whole trip as we packed up and began heading toward Baldy Town for our last food resupply. We were surrounded by Aspens and Ponderosa Pines when we had breakfast at Ewells Park. Once we got to the road that led down to Baldy Town, we had a spectacular view of the towering mountains of Philmont. We could see Touch-Me-Not Mountain, the Tooth of Time, and of course Baldy Mountain. We could also see the canyon where Miranda is located (last outpost of the trek) and Wilson Mesa (where we had breakfast yesterday). Once we got to Baldy Town, we were surprised by the Lowlanders who also happened to be there waiting for their resupply (commissary there opens at 10am). We got to catch up with them including asking how climbing Baldy was. After grabbing our resupply, topping off on water, and getting some souvenirs from the trading post, we pushed on toward French Henry for some program. We made an S-hook and did some gold panning. Then, we did arguably our toughest climb of the whole trip by ascending up "The Wall" which gained about 800 feet in 0.8 miles (equivalent of 1000 feet over a mile). We were rewarded with an amazing meadow that had great views of the surrounding 11,000+ foot mountains. We claimed campsite #11 at Copper Park. The forest was one of a kind up there, half of it was some of the most beautiful Ponderosa Pines I've seen and some had a lot of moss on them that gave a nice alpine look to it. We went to bed at 8pm eager to wake up at 4am for hiking the mountain we've all trained over for the last 6 months, Baldy Mountain.
