Mother in law wanted a girl from Village but I was from the city

Everline Adhiambo was born and raised in Homabay, the youngest child in her family. Life at home was not easy, and hardship forced her sister into marriage while Everline was still in class six. Later, her father passed away, leaving all responsibilities to her mother, who struggled even to put food on the table.

When Everline was in class seven, one of her relatives told her mother that she would take Everline to Nairobi to pursue a course. However, upon arrival, Everline was shocked to learn that she had actually been brought to work as a house help.

She endured many difficulties in that household, including being exposed to inappropriate influences. When her relative returned to the USA, Everline was left with his wife and children. One woman told her bluntly that she had been brought as a house help and would never receive help from the family. Determined to escape, Everline wrote a letter to her mother explaining her plan, packed her clothes, and left.

She walked a long distance until she reached Industrial Area, where she met a man and his son. After explaining her situation, they offered to help and took her to their home in Kibera. While living there, she reconnected with friends from her village. However, the man’s son began harassing her, and Everline decided to move in with one of her friends while she continued searching for a job.

Everline had a passion for salon work, and a good Samaritan recognized this and trained her, teaching her all she needed to know. As she worked, she met a man who seemed more mature than her. After some time, she decided to give him a chance, and they began living together—unaware that he had previously divorced four women. She chose to stay with him after facing mistreatment and denial of food in her previous household.

The man, however, was heavily influenced by his mother, doing everything she instructed. One day, Everline discovered that he had been cheating with students. With nowhere else to go, she endured the situation. For a year she did not conceive, and she was cruelly labeled barren. After receiving treatment, things began to improve. Yet during this time, the man impregnated another woman as well as Everline. When the other woman gave birth, Everline delivered her child the very next day.

Life became increasingly difficult because her mother-in-law always favored her son, no matter what he did. She even began verbally abusing Everline. Eventually, Everline’s children also faced rejection from their grandmother, who made them suffer, saying she did not want Everline’s children.

In the name of marriage and love, Everline endured countless hardships—so many that at times she almost lost hope in life.
