Our fourth conversation featured Erica Cirino, author of Thicker Than Water: The Quest for Solutions to the Plastics Crisis. Thicker than Water documents plastic across ecosystems and elements. The book shares stories from the primarily Black, Brown, Indigenous, poor, and rural communities that are disproportionately harmed by industrial pollution and injustice globally, and uncovers strategies that work to prevent plastic from causing further devastation to our planet and its inhabitants.
For this conversation, Erica was joined by Defend Our Health’s director of campaigns and programs, Maya Rommwatt. Maya discussed Defend Our Health's recent scorecard, which ranks 10 popular kids’ clothing brands on their efforts to use less plastic and fewer toxic chemicals. She explained why kids are more at risk from chemical exposure, how the brands ranked, and what consumers can do to protect themselves and push for meaningful change at the industry level. The conversation was moderated by Defend’s executive director, Emily Carey Perez de Alejo.
