What is the Lateran Basilica?*

The Lateran Basilica, officially called The Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour and of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, is the oldest and highest-ranking church in the world. It was built in Rome by Emperor Constantine around the year 320, after Christianity was finally legalized.

It is not just any church, it is the Pope’s cathedral, because the Pope is the Bishop of Rome. This means it’s the mother and head of all churches in the world the “Mother Church.” Every Catholic church in the world traces its spiritual connection back to this one place, the heart of our unity as one family in Christ.
