Nelson Rockefeller was governor of New York State, Vice President of the United States, and made several runs for the Presidency, but he never slowed down when it came to his parallel life as a patron of the arts. Together with his wife Happy, he wanted to explore the many ways that materials could be shaped and reshaped to make new works of art. The couple’s vision and curiosity brought them directly to artist’s studios, and they developed close relationships with a number of artists in their collection, including Joan Miró, Jean Dubuffet and Fernand Léger. This fall, Sotheby’s is proud to offer the Rockefeller’s most treasured pieces in a dedicated auction of 25 lots. Discover how the couple seamlessly blended fine art with important design, as consoles and table lamps by Albert Giacometti stood side by side with elegant murals from masters like Henri Matisse.
