IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EDGES of chert, flint and steel, casting sparks, char cloth, and breaking chert

1) The best Chert edge possible for Flint and Steel is a sharp 90 degree-ish edge that allows char cloth to lay flat upon it. A less than 90 degree edge will work beautifully, but can only be used/struck one time. Many times a 90 degree edge can be used multiple times.
2) Don't waste your Flint and Steelable 90 edges on casting sparks. A piece of Chert has many very sharp edges that will cast a shower of sparks down onto char material. Choose the less desirable, sort of chisel point, edges to cast sparks. All the edges on your Chert that will not allow a piece of char cloth to flat along it are the edges to use for casting sparks. Again, preserve your Flint And Steelable edges until you runout of the others.
3) Char Cloth for Flint And Steel should be torn in half to expose threads, both the thready edges lined up on the edge of your Chert, both edges should lay flat on the Chert.
4) When you've broken off and used up all your sharp edges, you could flake off around the edges of the Chert. This makes chisel point edges that's mostly just good for casting sparks. You may want to just break the whole piece of Chert for more of those all purpose, sharp, 90 degree-ish edges. Today, I broke the whole Chert.
