Static is the flagship character of the Milestone Comics universe, also known as the "DakotaVerse." Milestone was created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle with the explicit goal of combating racial stereotypes and integrating more diverse superheroes into mainstream comics. In 1993, DC Comics made a distribution deal with Milestone to publish its first four titles: Static, Hardware, Icon, and Blood Syndicate. Static Shock, an animated series that ran from 2000 to 2004, brought Static into the public eye beyond comic book readers. The show cemented its place within the larger DC Animated Universe (DCAU), alongside Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, and Batman Beyond, to name a few. Static even crossed over with characters like The Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl. Milestone officially merged with the DC Comics continuity in 2008, with Static becoming an official member of the Teen Titans. Static, along with Icon and Rocket, made appearances in a couple of seasons of Young Justice. While the DCEU never brought the Michael B. Jordan-produced Static Shock live-action movie to fruition, James Gunn has expressed interest in integrating Static and other Milestone characters into his new DCU or as part of the Elseworlds line.
