Ep. 125 MAKING A GORGEOUS GOLD MOSAIC MIRROR FRAME & the Smalti Mosaic Owl Gets Some Feathers!

Welcome to my studio!
I jump into piecing an easy mosaic mirror frame from an estate sale. Using E-6000 for beads and GE II Silicone adhesive for tiles and tempered glass, I work on the golden mosaic frame. The outside gets a row of round beads. Then I cut Illuminations tiles in half for the inside part of the frame. Next, I layer Morjo ™ 12mm IRIDESCENT Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile in faint-golden-yellow-irid from Mosaic Art Supply next to the beads. Using faceted gold beads, I weave them back and forth in a viney, organic way around the frame. Then inside each swoop formed from the vines, I lay in hand-cut irridized gold stained glass leaves, faceted gold flowers and gold mirrored tempered glass. The tempered glass must be added one piece at a time with tweezers. The movement and sparkle from this mosaic look so great!
3:43 I start on Mosaic Mirror #4, which will be done in grays! I start with tiny irridized 8mm tiles around the inside and that is as far as I manage this week.
5:27 Alrighty! I tackle the smalti owl! It's been a few weeks, but I'm excited to start on the head feathers, which are speckled in brown, black and cream. I'm excited to use a speckled Eco-Smalti made by Morassutti in Italy, and purchased from Smalti Emporium here in the U.S. It is manufactured using environmentally friendly methods, which is a plus! But the real draw for me is that it is PERFECT for the speckled feathers on my owl's head!
6:21 Using a bed of black tinted Laticrete 254 thinset, I tweeze in feathery bits of smalti. They begin with a diagonal slant up the head, and then transition to a vertical lay. Some of the pieces are actually laid horizontally because of the patterning on them. The top of the head has less brown and more black and white only. Since I have a bit of time and extra thinset, I am able to piece in the ear tuft on one side! I think the progress is fantastic and it's getting exciting!!!
