Davao City

Davao City’s history is a tapestry woven from indigenous traditions, colonial encounters, and modern progress. Long before foreign settlers arrived, the fertile lands and river valleys were home to diverse indigenous groups such as the Bagobo, Mandaya, and other Lumad peoples, alongside Muslim communities led by powerful chieftains like Datu Bago. These early inhabitants cultivated the soil, traded with neighboring tribes, and built a culture deeply rooted in the rhythms of nature and the sacredness of Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak.

In 1543, Spanish explorers under Ruy López de Villalobos first set foot in the area, but it was not until 1848 that José Cruz de Uyanguren established a permanent settlement along the banks of the Davao River, naming it Nueva Vergara. His attempt to subdue the local tribes met fierce resistance, especially from Datu Bago, whose defiance became a symbol of indigenous resilience against colonization.

The American period in the early 1900s brought new waves of settlers, most notably the Japanese, who transformed Davao into a thriving agricultural hub through vast abaca plantations. By the 1930s, the city had earned the nickname “Little Tokyo” due to its large Japanese community and flourishing trade.

On October 16, 1936, President Manuel L. Quezon signed the charter that formally recognized Davao as a city, marking the beginning of its modern governance. World War II, however, brought devastation when Japanese forces occupied the city, only to be liberated by Allied troops in 1945.

In the decades that followed, Davao rose from the ashes of war to become a center of commerce, agriculture, and industry in Mindanao. Declared a highly urbanized city in 1979, it has since grown into a bustling metropolis celebrated for its cultural diversity, economic vitality, and natural wonders.

Today, Davao City proudly carries its titles: the “King City of the South,” the “Durian Capital of the Philippines,” and the “Chocolate Capital of the Philippines.” It is a gateway to adventure, with Mount Apo towering as its guardian, and a city where tradition and progress coexist, a living testament to the resilience and creativity of its people.
