In this first episode of Module 2, we pivot from Mars colonies to the wild procedural galaxies of No Man’s Sky to talk seriously about how NASA actually explores dangerous places. We use NMS hazard worlds (toxic, frozen, irradiated, airless) as stand-ins for real mission classes, then map them to NASA exploration protocols: scouting from orbit, multi-phase landing and traverse planning, safe-zone siting, and “walkback” limits that define how far crews can range from shelter. Along the way, we introduce core ideas from NASA-STD-3001 and the Human Integration Design Handbook for surviving extreme climates, plus field rules like “always know your next shelter” and “never cross a ridge without a retreat path.” The goal is to get you thinking like a space architect who can turn a hostile biome, in-game or in real life, into a network of deliberate safe havens rather than a pretty backdrop.
