Shit Ain't Free (Sliding Scale) is a song I wrote while unemployed in 2013.
The lyrics refer to the struggle in having no money and a frustration with basic mores of society. It also references the stark contrast of disparate socio- economic groups living side by side.
This piece explores the idea of my quotidian struggle with money and employment balanced against my fear of selling out by channeling a performance in drag as an escapist version of my own female self. Futility exists as the common thread between these ideas of poverty, unemployment and bad makeup.
