Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful hurricane in the world in 2025 and the strongest ever recorded in Jamaica, struck the country with incredible force. The aftermath included widespread power outages and four deaths. The storm left behind widespread destruction, including demolished buildings and flooded towns. Waves generated by the storm reached 6 meters in height, and wind speeds were recorded at 295 km/h (185 mph).
In Jamaica, the hurricane was known about in advance, giving residents and authorities time to prepare. Locals boarded up windows and stocked up on food and medicine. But this was of little help: the natural disaster struck mostly resort towns, destroying everything.
Jamaican officials say it will be a while before they can assess the damage from the storm, as several towns are currently practically underwater. Authorities will first have to deal with the debris and destruction caused by the hurricane's strong winds. Around 25,000 tourists who were vacationing in Jamaica at the time remain in a difficult situation in the country.
Jamaica has currently been declared a "natural disaster area." Around 15,000 residents are gradually leaving shelters, and 530,000 homes remain without power. According to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the country lacks the infrastructure to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The hurricane has been called the strongest natural disaster to strike the island since record-keeping began (the last 174 years). Hurricane Melissa is already being called one of the most powerful in history. At its peak, the hurricane's winds reached 300 km/h (186 mph), exceeding the force of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005 and killed 1,392 people.
The cyclone also affected other countries: Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba suffered severe damage. The hurricane's center is currently located approximately 245 kilometers south of the central Bahamas. Wind gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, are reaching 150 kilometers per hour (93 mph). Melissa is forecast to pass west of Bermuda, with the remnants of the storm expected to reach Europe early next week.
