📍 Tokens in LLM World. Imagine you’re reading a book, but instead of full sentences, the AI reads tiny chunks of text. Those chunks are called tokens. If you understand tokens, you understand half the magic behind how LLMs work.
📍 📍 📍 LLMs don’t read language the way humans do. They break everything into tokens so the model can process text mathematically.
Why do LLMs use tokens?
Because language is messy.
Breaking text into tokens gives the model a consistent unit to work with.
Every token gets converted into numbers,
and those numbers are what the model actually understands.
So instead of reading:
“AI is transforming the world.”
The model sees:
[“AI”, “ is”, “ transform”, “ing”, “ the”, “ world”, “.”]
Token limits: the part everyone forgets
Every LLM has a maximum token capacity.
This is like the size of its working memory.
For example, if a model supports 128k tokens, it can only read, write, and think within that boundary.
