Plant these by September for unreal flowers & abundant edible seeds

I'm so excited to highlight one of my absolute favorite plants this year. I've totally fallen in love with Scarlet Flax, and I can't wait to tell you a little more about this beautiful flower.

I'm sitting next to a garden bed FULL of scarlet flax. We've sold blue flax seeds for a while now. While the two are related, the scarlet variety is really special.

To start, the color is just unreal. You really need to experience it in person. It's also SUPER easy to grow. I direct sowed this whole patch so I didn't have the extra hassle of dealing with starter pots and transplanting the seedlings out.

In some parts of the world, it's used as a cover crop. The long stems can be processed to make linen, and the seeds are also edible. You've probably seen flax seeds in baking or even just on their own, and this is where they come from! After the flower has bloomed, a round seed pod will form.

We save seeds to sell and eat ourselves, but I also love how much life the seeds help support. This area will soon be filled with birds coming to snack.
