The term “Islamic capitalism” is misleading. Capitalism is an economic ideology built on profit maximisation, unlimited accumulation and individual ownership treated as an absolute right. Islam, on the other hand, is a complete system revealed by Allah swt, with its own economic rules, moral limits and social responsibilities. You cannot simply attach the word Islamic to capitalism and claim it becomes an Islamic system.

Islam does not view wealth as something a person owns without limits. Wealth belongs to Allah swt, and people are only trustees of it. In a genuine Islamic system, wealth is meant to circulate throughout society, not concentrate in the hands of a small elite. Hoarding, exploitation and extreme inequality are not unfortunate side effects to be managed later. They are injustices that Islam actively works to prevent. Capitalism accepts inequality as normal. Islam does not.

The promotion of Islamic capitalism cannot be separated from the legacy of Western colonialism in the Muslim world. Colonial powers dismantled Islamic political and economic institutions and replaced them with Western legal, financial and educational systems. Over time, this produced a mindset that views Western frameworks as the default and Islam as something that must be adjusted to fit within them. As a result, many Muslims today unconsciously adopt a colonial viewpoint by assuming capitalism is inevitable and then asking how Islam can be made compatible with it, rather than questioning capitalism itself.

What is often promoted today as Islamic capitalism usually means keeping the capitalist framework while removing interest and adding halal contracts. This changes the appearance but not the reality. Many so called Islamic financial practices still revolve around debt, profit obsession and market dominance, which contradict the spirit and objectives of Islam.

Islam does not aim to create capitalism without riba. It aims to establish justice, balance and collective responsibility. Zakah is not optional charity, it is a obligation and Islam is not a modified version of any man made ideology. It is a distinct system that cannot be reduced to capitalism with Islamic terminology.
