Shawnda Chapman—who has served as Director of the Girls Fund Initiative at the Ms. Foundation—has spent her career advancing racial justice, gender justice, and youth justice for girls of color. Before joining the Ms. Foundation, she led a national initiative to prevent and end girls’ incarceration at the Vera Institute of Justice and directed the Beyond the Bars Fellowship at Columbia University’s Center for Justice. Drawing from her own lived experience, Shawnda’s work focuses on dismantling the systems that criminalize marginalized girls and creating pathways toward healing, liberation, and long-term community safety.
