【Jolene - Reedshine & Mapleshade | Animatic】

Reedshine is often crucified by the fandom way more than she should be, she's never exactly been a character anyone thought well of? This all mainly stems from the fact MV isn't that well written and is written from Maple's perspective only, so when Mapleshade sees Reedshine as a annoying rival to her mate, so does the fandom it seems. But Reedshine's to me is honestly one of the more sympathetic characters in the novella? Reedshine picks her mate's - Appledusk's side when Mapleshade gets exiled from RiverClan, despite that moment being when she finds out he's been cheating on her and it's very sad when you think about it! I mean she chose someone who admitted to cheating on her? He likely would've never admitted to it if he wasn't caught? What made her choose to stick with Appledusk like that? Well, we don't know, and likely never will, but to me that was a very interesting fact i didn't really want to let go. That scene probably shows more potential personality in her than anything else ever will. I wanted to do something with Reedshine regarding this, so i decided to make this animatic!
For this, i set the story in a mini AU. (since the song doesn't fit the canon perfectly) We know Reedshine canonicly had a thing for Appledusk since basically day one of MV so she has no idea he and Mapleshade are ever a thing. So here, when Ravenwing finds out Mapleshade's secret, so does Reedshine. She overhears everything and then instantly approaches her before Mapleshade goes back to her camp with her kits. Reedshine knows in order for Mapleshade's kits to be Appledusk's, it had to happen when she and him were already together, however like in canon, she doesn't care. Reedshine wanted Appledusk so badly she couldn't bare to lose him, she didn't care if he cheated on her as long as he remained with her. Reedshine knows that the most obvious case scenario is that Mapleshade is about to get exiled since the medicine cat of all people just found out she broke the warrior code, so she begs Mapleshade to not go to RiverClan because of the kits' father and instead go anywhere else, so she could remain with him. Mapleshade doesn't pick up that Reedshine and Appledusk are already together, so she thinks that she just wants to get with him. In the end, Mapleshade doesn't listen, she takes Appledusk despite Reedshine's pleading, except in a much, much different way.
