In ancient times, transportation was limited to ships and boats, and navigation across vast oceans like the Pacific was a huge challenge. One famous sailor, Captain Marius, was known for navigating through rough seas, but one day, his ship collided with rocks beneath the sea, damaging the wooden vessel. This incident led him to seek a solution to warn sailors about hidden dangers in the ocean. The Pacific Ocean was so vast that sailors could not rely on maps or any advanced technology, often depending on the sun or moon for direction.

One notable incident occurred when Captain Alister and his crew got lost in the middle of the Pacific after a sudden storm covered the sky with clouds, hiding all the stars. They lost their way, ran out of food and water, and many sailors perished before they were able to spot land. This tragedy led to the idea of building lighthouses, a way to guide sailors safely through dangerous waters.

In ancient Egypt, Alexandria faced similar problems. Ships approaching the city had to navigate through dangerous rocks, leading to frequent shipwrecks. To solve this, the ruler, Ptolemy II, hired the famous architect Sostratus to design a lighthouse that would guide ships safely into the harbor and warn them of submerged rocks. The result was the Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, standing 384 feet tall, made of white marble, with a fire burning continuously at the top to signal ships. This lighthouse became a symbol of safety and guidance for sailors.

As time passed, the concept of lighthouses spread, and more were built in areas with similar dangers. Initially, these lighthouses used fire, but this method had limitations. Later, candles and lamps were used, followed by the invention of electric bulbs. However, the light still didn’t travel very far. The breakthrough came when scientists discovered that placing lenses in front of the light would focus and direct it over greater distances. The invention of the Fresnel lens by French scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel revolutionized lighthouses, allowing them to project light much further. Today, nearly all lighthouses use this lens, ensuring the safety of ships navigating across vast oceans.
