Japan’s partnership with IOM is about much more than financial support: it is about shared values and a shared commitment to dignity, resilience, and opportunity for people on the move.
This week in Japan, at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, I was reminded of just how strategic and far-reaching this collaboration really is. In 2024 alone, Japan contributed USD 51.5 million in voluntary contributions to our various projects all over the world, making it one of IOM’s top donors. And so far, in 2025, the commitments are even higher – enabling urgent humanitarian action and long-term solutions.
This year, Japan newly contributed USD 32 million which will strengthen resilience across Sub-Saharan Africa, from humanitarian aid for those affected by the conflict in Sudan to border management and displacement response in countries from Mozambique to Côte d'Ivoire to Uganda. Beyond Africa, Japan’s assistance spans the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, supporting communities affected by crises in places like Myanmar, Ukraine, and beyond.
Partnerships like this remind us what solidarity looks like in action: turning shared values into concrete results for people facing displacement, conflict, and disaster. My thanks to the Government and people of Japan for their steadfast leadership and trust in IOM’s mission.
