EASY AND CHEAP IBM Model M Cable Replacement and PS/2 cable Coiling!

Easy and cheap PS/2 cable replacement on a IBM Model M keyboard. Factory cable is broken or is in bad condition? In this video, I show how to coil a cheap straight cable to replace the old one. I also show how to open a IBM Model M (how to dismantle a IBM Model M). Than I soldering very easily the new one on the keyboard.

That video have 2 parts. The in the first one I coil the cable to give it a vintage look. I use a heater gun, make sure it's hot enough. Hair dryer is not hot enough. But be careful to not stay to long at the same place, the cable will melt!
I heat it for about 6-10 minutes and I immediately put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. You have to wait about 1 hour after before you remove the tape.
IN the second part, I explain how to dismantle a Model M mechanical keyboard and how to connect the cable to replace the old one.

It's an easy way to give a vintage look to a new cable. New PS/2 cable have 6 wires inside, Model M have 4 wires and the colours doesn't match... I tried to soldering the wires directly but I could not find a wire match that work. Si I come with this solution. Removing almost all the old cable, but keep the original PS/2 connector to the keyboard side to plug it to a female PS/2 port on the new cable. Than I hide the connection inside the keyboard.
You could keep the connection outside the key board. The coiled cable would be detachable. But I personally wanted to keep the vintage look of the keyboard.

I choose to solder the wires before heat shrink them. But you could just twist them together. Just make sure no unstripped wires touch each other. Make sure they are isolate.
