Can Scoliosis Be Corrected In Adults?

Scoliosis is a progressive condition that is incurable but highly treatable. Although commonly associated with children, as the age group increases, the greater the population that has scoliosis.

The most prevalent condition is something called adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This is normally diagnosed between 10 and 18 years of age; the word adolescent is only put in front of there because the patient is an adolescent at the time of diagnosis. If left untreated, it becomes adult idiopathic scoliosis.

Approximately 80% of all cases are this idiopathic type of scoliosis, meaning there's no clearly associated cause of scoliosis. We think scoliosis is a multifactorial condition, and there can be many different factors that occur during growth and development that could lead to a curvature developing. The remaining 20% of scoliosis cases are associated with a known cause, and these tend to fall into four main categories. neuromuscular scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, degenerative or de novo scoliosis and traumatic scoliosis.

The most common type of scoliosis in adults is idiopathic. Some of these patients are diagnosed as adolescent cases who become adults and progress into the adult stage. But a lot of cases of adolescent idiopathic cases go undiagnosed.

The second most common type of scoliosis is degenerative scoliosis. In degenerative scoliosis, one area is rapidly generating and is much more degenerated than the rest of the spine, telling you that something is causing this area to degenerate quicker, and normally it has to do with alignment.

The symptoms of scoliosis in adult patients are very different from what we see in adolescent cases, regardless of the size of the curve. The most common symptom of scoliosis in adolescents is posture; they normally don't have any pain or any dysfunction, regardless of the size of the curve. Because what's causing the curve to progress in the adolescent form is growth. And this growth is elongating, and it doesn't lead to any compression of nerves or tissues or muscles, or disks.

In adult patients, the most common symptom of scoliosis is pain. And the reason why is that when the scoliosis progresses in the adult stage, it is compressing over time. This can affect the surrounding muscles and nerves, and they're now vulnerable to this compression or uneven natural forces. This can lead to pain throughout the body. The pain is not related to the size of the curve as you grow but more to how much you progress as an adult. Also, curve progression is not linear; as it continues to progress over time, it tends to accelerate its rate of progression.

There are two options for scoliosis treatment:
Traditional treatment is waiting until the curve is big enough to perform spinal fusion surgery.
Conservative treatment recommends nonsurgical approaches that aim to reduce the curve in a corrective manner; this reduction can directly relate to better function.
