Between April 1846 and September 1847, several major battles were fought between the US and Mexico. This conflict, known as the Mexican-American War, was a pivotal moment in the history of America and the history of Mexico. As the world's greatest power, the US was well-prepared for this war and did not face much difficulty in defeating Mexico. The history of us stole Mexico reveals how these events unfolded.

After being surrounded on all sides, Mexico eventually conceded defeat. Following Mexico's defeat, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848. This treaty was crucial in shaping the modern US Mexico border and expanding American territory. With the signing of this treaty, the US acquired approximately 55% of Mexico's territory, including California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona—states rich in history like the history of California and the history of Texas.

In addition to these states, the disputed territory of Texas was also acquired by the US. Before coming under American control, people from Mexico lived in all these areas. The US offered people the option to either remain in these territories with full American citizenship and all its benefits or return to Mexico without any restrictions. People were given one year to choose their citizenship, and 90% chose to stay and accept American citizenship.

In exchange for gaining 55% of Mexico's territory, the US paid Mexico 15 million dollars in installments over five years. President James Polk initiated the American-Mexican War based on false pretenses, aiming to expand US territory through "westward expansion." This conflict is often compared to other significant wars, such as the "American Revolutionary War" and the "Mexican Revolutionary War."

Many people, including Abraham Lincoln, opposed Polk's actions, arguing that the war was unjust. Lincoln challenged Polk to prove his claims, which Polk was never able to do. Despite all the criticism, James Polk succeeded in acquiring more than half of Mexico, marking a controversial yet significant achievement of his presidency.
