Welcome to the Advantage Home Care training series. This video, covers the best practices for cleaning your client's bathroom.
With the Consumer Direct Services program the client or consumer directs the hiring, training, and supervision of their personal care attendant. These training video series are designed to provide guidance to attendants regarding best practices.
In this video, we’ll focus on cleaning the bathroom thoroughly, with an emphasis on attention to detail and a systematic approach to ensure all surfaces are properly cleaned.
Before we dive into the supplies and steps, it’s important to remember that your client may have specific preferences or needs. They could have sensitivities or allergies to certain chemicals, or they may prefer a particular brand or scent. Always have a conversation with your client beforehand to understand their requirements.
BATHROOM CLEANING SUPPLIES CHECKLIST:
All-purpose cleaner – for general surfaces like countertops and cabinets.
Glass cleaner – for mirrors and any glass surfaces.
Disinfectant cleaner – especially for toilet seats and high-touch areas.
Bathroom scrub – for bathtubs, sinks, and shower tiles.
Baking soda & vinegar – natural cleaning agents for tough stains and odors.
Sponges, microfiber cloths, and scrub brushes – for scrubbing and wiping down surfaces.
Toilet brush – for deep cleaning the inside of the toilet bowl.
Mop & bucket – for cleaning bathroom floors.
Garbage bags – for disposing of trash and waste.
Gloves and face mask – to protect yourself from chemicals and dust.
STEP-BY-STEP BATHROOM CLEANING GUIDE:
1. Clearing the Area
Start by removing all items from the bathroom counters, shelves, and any other surfaces.
Take out trash, replace the liner, and clean the trash can exterior.
2. Mirrors and Glass Surfaces
Use glass cleaner to wipe down mirrors and any glass surfaces, making sure to remove any smudges or streaks.
3. Sink and Countertops
Wipe down countertops using an all-purpose cleaner suitable for the surface (e.g., granite, tile, etc.).
Scrub the sink with a bathroom scrub or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to remove stains and soap scum. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.
Pay attention to faucets and handles, as these areas can accumulate grime.
4. Toilet Cleaning
Use disinfectant cleaner to wipe down the exterior of the toilet, focusing on high-touch areas like the handle and lid.
Use a toilet brush to clean the inside of the bowl, paying special attention to under the rim.
Flush the toilet and wipe the seat and lid with disinfectant.
5. Shower and Bathtub
Remove any items like shampoo bottles and soap dishes.
Use a bathroom scrub or an all-purpose cleaner to scrub the tiles, grout, and bathtub.
For glass shower doors, use a glass cleaner or vinegar to remove soap scum and water spots.
Rinse and wipe everything down thoroughly.
6. Floors
Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove dust, hair, and debris, paying attention to corners.
Mop the floor with a suitable cleaner for the bathroom tiles or vinyl flooring.
Make sure to clean the mop after use by soaking it in warm water with cleaner or washing the mop head if possible.
7. Finishing Touches
Wipe down handles, light switches, and any other high-touch areas with disinfectant.
Replace all items on the counter and shelves, ensuring they are clean and organized.
Empty the trash bin and replace the liner.
Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated to prevent mildew from developing.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure your client’s bathroom is clean, hygienic, and pleasant to use.
