We combine Newark basin detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, heavy mineral assemblage analysis, and previous geologic investigations in a holistic approach to determine provenance. We then use this data to delineate the clastic sediment body of the Newark basin into sub-basin groups by depositional system. Previously constructed cross sections and bore hole data from the basin are then employed to construct clastic sediment isopachs to estimate the sediment volume of each group. As the volume of sediment in a depositional system scales to the size of its associated source area, we use these estimates to interpret the source(s) of sediment of each group. Our results split the basin into five sub-basin depositional system groups, with the largest systems being from Laurentian and Peri-Gondwanan sources along the hanging wall.
Andrew is a PhD Candidate at Lehigh University and Geoscience Trainee for the PA Bureau of Geological Survey. He received his BS and MS in Earth Science from the universities of Virginia and North Carolina at Charlotte, respectively. His geoscience interests focus on the post-orogenic landscape evolution of the Appalachians and geoscience outreach.
