Many players want help with their tennis forehand and often ask me if they should hit with either an open stance or a closed stance.

I tell them it really depends on the ball they're hitting.

I don't believe you should hit exclusively with an open stance or a closed stance on your tennis forehand. The top pros in the world use both stances on their tennis forehands.

I want to dispel the myth in tennis circles that you should choose between stepping in or going with an open stance on your tennis forehand.

Here's the best plan to follow. Use the closed stance tennis forehand when the ball is in the middle of the court so that you can be more aggressive with your footwork and your mindset.

The open stance footwork on your tennis forehand is best used when you get moved really wide and are hitting the ball near the singles sideline. Hitting with an open stance is more natural the further away you move from the middle of the court.

One exception is when you are in the middle of the court and the ball comes slower and higher. In this case, you can load up your outside leg and open your stance instead of stepping in because you'll have to jump off the ground as you hit the ball.

Next time you're on the court, use both the open stance and the closed stance on your tennis forehand at the right times.
