The Masaka Chief Magistrate, Albert Asiimwe, has ordered a full vote recount in the Kalungu West parliamentary election following a petition by Ismael Ssemakula, who is challenging the victory of Joseph Gonzaga Sewungu (NUP) over alleged irregularities in the tallying process.
According to court records, the recount will be conducted on Friday, January 23, 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m., under court supervision, with representatives from the Electoral Commission (EC) and all contesting parties present. The court also directed the EC to halt gazettement of the results until the matter is fully resolved.
Meanwhile, in Nwoya County, the EC has advised Tony Awany (NRM) to seek legal redress in court after losing to Denish Geoffrey Komakech (DP) by just 22 votes, one of the narrowest margins in the district.
In Aruu County, Pader District, veteran politician Samuel Odonga Otto has also challenged the declaration of Christopher Komakech (NRM), citing violations of the Parliamentary Elections Act, which mandates a recount when the margin is below 50 votes.
These cases highlight the growing role of courts in resolving tightly contested parliamentary elections across Uganda.
