The Election Commission of Nepal has officially recognized Gagan Thapa as the legitimate President of Nepali Congress following the Special General Convention.
With this historic decision, the Nepali Congress party symbol (Tree) and official party flag have now gone to the Gagan Thapa–led faction. From today, Gagan Thapa is legally and constitutionally the official President of the Nepali Congress.
This decision has left Sher Bahadur Deuba and other senior leaders without official party status. Throughout the day, both factions claimed legitimacy, but the Election Commission Nepal ruled in favor of the newly elected leadership from the Special Convention.
As a result, Nepali Congress is now divided into two factions:
Gagan Thapa faction (officially recognized)
Deuba faction (unrecognized)
Political analysts believe the Deuba side is likely to challenge the Election Commission’s decision at the Supreme Court of Nepal. Earlier today, leaders from the Deuba camp had warned of nationwide protests if such a decision was announced.
Key questions now:
Will the Deuba faction accept Gagan Thapa’s leadership?
Will Nepali Congress reunite?
Or will Nepal witness the formation of a new political party?
Stay tuned for full analysis, reactions, and ground reports.
