🎹 This video features a synthesizer-based reinterpretation of “Regret” by New Order, performed entirely on the Roland JD-Xi and programmed using the JDXi Editor.
The arrangement makes extensive use of the JD-Xi’s multi-part architecture, combining layered digital synthesis, analog voicing, and classic drum machine sounds to capture the character of the original track while maintaining a distinctly hardware-synth aesthetic.
Sound Design Breakdown
🎸 Digital Synth 1 – Guitar Layer
A three-partial guitar stack is used to emulate the layered rhythmic guitar textures:
Partial 1: Distorted Guitar
Partial 2: Funk Guitar
Partial 3: Bright Strat
These are balanced and voiced to provide clarity in the midrange while retaining rhythmic punch.
🎸 Digital Synth 2 – Bass (Picked Bass)
This part provides a tight, articulate low end that locks in with the drum groove, supporting the harmonic movement without overpowering the mix.
🎻 Analog Synth – Strings
Oct. Strings (Cheat Mode enabled)
The JD-Xi’s analog section is pushed beyond its usual single-voice limitation using Cheat Mode, allowing for a fuller, wider string texture that fills out the arrangement and adds emotional weight.
🥁 Drums
🎧 TR-606 kit
CYM1 cymbal at reduced level
The 606 kit delivers a restrained, vintage drum feel consistent with early electronic pop aesthetics, with the cymbal level intentionally lowered to preserve space and avoid masking the melodic elements.
🛠️Tools & Workflow
Instrument: Roland JD-Xi
Editor: JDXi Editor (custom patch programming and parameter control)
Approach: Faithful tonal homage rather than note-for-note replication
This performance highlights the JD-Xi’s versatility as both a sound design platform and a live performance instrument, demonstrating how modern programming techniques can be used to reinterpret classic electronic pop tracks.
