Welcome to the AI x AWS Disaster Recovery Series!
Traditional DNS failover can take minutes (or longer) because the internet needs time to “learn” the new DNS answer. In this project, we’ll build edge-based failover using Amazon CloudFront origin groups, so traffic switches between regions in seconds, not minutes—the same pattern companies like DAZN and Twitch use to maintain uptime during outages.
🧠 What you’ll learn today:
Deploy/verify a multi-region backend (AWS App Runner in us-east-1 + us-west-2)
Create a CloudFront distribution as a global entry point
Configure origin groups for automatic primary→secondary failover
Set failover criteria (including 404) to catch “paused” origins
Simulate an outage and watch automatic failover + failback happen live
💎 Secret Mission: Add production alerting with CloudWatch + SNS so you get emailed when failovers occur
Clean up resources to avoid ongoing charges
