🎼About the etude:

I wrote this etude with the intention to give you a taste of the classic Phryigian scale feeling.

The etude consists of a simple, 4-note melody and a 1-octave scale practice which is both a memorisation practice & a speed/technique practice.

I am demonstrating the etude together with a backing track, which consists of 2 chords: Em & Fmaj7.

The combination of these two chords , which in music harmony terms would be written : I(m) , IIb(maj7) is the most common Phrygian chord sequence.

🎼The Phrygian scale
The Phyrigian scale is the 3rd mode of the major scale (briefly explained in the video).

Scale formula is: 1, 2b, 3b, 4, 5, 6b, 7b

In terms of the musical characteristics, the Phyrigian scale has a very recognisable dark, melancholic sound and is often used in Spanish guitar music.

🎼What you hear in the demonstration?

In the first round -We play the melody and the scale practice on the 2nd position, with the scale root on the 4th & 2nd strings

In the 2nd round - We repeat the exact same melody & scale practice on the 7th position, with the scale root on the 5th & 3rd strings.

In the 3rd round - We repeat the exact same melody & scale practice, 1 octave higher, on the 10th & 7th positions - with the scale root on the 3rd & 1st strings.

This is the key to mastering the fretboard - being able to see the scale boxes and move them around to different fretboard positions freely.
In the 4th round - I am demonstrating more free improvisation - with a Q&A form - a repeating "question" phrase with open dynamic answers.
