In Part 2 of How and Why The Church Invented Hell, I focus on the early church between the 2nd and 5th centuries, examining how early church theologians and heresiologists used passages of scripture to support their already established notions of hell as a place of eternal conscious torment. The concepts of hell and the afterlife developed by church theologians and heresiologists after the biblical period were significantly shaped by a blend of Greco-Roman mythology, Jewish mythology, Jewish allegory, and Jewish apocalyptic literature. I also delve into the significant influence of non-canonical texts like the Apocalypse of Peter and the Apocalypse of Paul, which provided vivid imagery and narratives that shaped early Christian version of the afterlife.
I also highlight the role of other early church figures, such as Tertullian and Irenaeus, who contributed to the systematization of hell as a tool to enforce doctrine. The decisions and decrees of various church councils during the 4th and 5th centuries further entrenched the notion of hell as a means of control and power.
A major part of this process of hell becoming systematized includes the tremendous impact of Augustine. Augustine's writings, particularly in City of God, were instrumental in solidifying the concept of eternal punishment within Christian theology. His interpretations and teachings not only influenced his contemporaries but also left a lasting legacy on Christian doctrine.
The concept of hell was used strategically by the early church to scare heretics and consolidate power. This tactic was not only a theological tool but also a method for the church to grow in influence, control, and wealth. The idea of hell as eternal conscious torment continues to be used today in similar ways to maintain power and control over believers.
Join me as I uncover the historical development of hell in early Christianity and its enduring impact on the church and society.
