Giethoorn - The fairyland village

Geithoorn in the Netherlands is a fairyland village. is a mostly car-free village in the northeastern part of Holland. It’s known for its boat-filled waterways, footpaths, bicycle trails and centuries-old thatched-roof houses. In the old part of the village, there were no roads, and all transport was undertaken by water over one of the many canals. The lakes in Giethoorn were formed by peat digging.

Commonly known as the Venice of the North, Giethoorn has 176 bridges and has no roads in the center. This car-free area is the commercial heart of our village. You can rent whisper boats, board a guided cruise or visit a museum here, along with lots of choices of restaurants and cafes. This cycling/walking path known as the 'Binnenpad' and is like walking on to a movie set.

You can rent a boat like we did and sail along the canals. The canals are mostly one way and you can come back to the boat docks by the lake beside the village. Its a truly magnificent experience. The village seems like a painting and is etched in our memories forever.

We are the Jajabars. Jajabar in Bengali means a nomad or a vagabond. We plug ourselves in Edmonton, Canada and once the batteries are recharged, we start again.
