In this region public transit includes cable cars, so on a rest day take advantage of the ride up to the village of San Genesio. The cable car or Funivia offers great views of the terraced vineyards, Bolzano and the surrounding Dolomite peaks. Head down the main road past San Genesio towards Bolzano. For some added excitement turn off to explore one of the steepest paved descents anywhere. There are lots of sections well in excess of 20% that just disappear around narrow hidden corners. Rejoin the main road near the bottom. Here it is too steep for switchbacks. The solution is Spiral Tunnels. It better descending where you can stay ahead of the traffic than trying to stay ahead of the cars on a slow climb
