This simulation shows the impact of the 76mm M79 AP with hardened steel body being fired from the US M18 Hellcat tank at a range of 0.49km, targeting the front hull of the modified Tiger I tank with a sloped armour at 45 degrees.
Prior to the start of the war, sloped Armor on tanks was not commonplace. The Germans saw no major problems with their existing tanks after the early campaigns, and fully expected the Russians to only have light tanks, which were easily overcome by the Panzers. The M4 Sherman, a notable tank with sloped frontal armour, did not begin development until 1941.
All tanks with a stepped front H shape were designed this way because the requirement for armor protection was limited to bullets only at least initially and all of them used direct vision ports.
Periscope sites were a solution and design of armored house. The Panther and IS-2 for 1944 were compromises noting that in the Panther G the direct vision port for the driver was removed and similarly the IS-3 and IS-4 had none either.
