Although a hit for everyone from Jimmy Dorsey, through Jim Reeves, the Shadows, Ry Cooder and Michael Buble, Maria Elena - this beautiful melody was actually written in 1932 by the Mexican songwriter Lorenzo Barcelata who sadly passed away in 1943 only a couple of years after it topped the charts.
I've wanted to do this one for years, in fact I used to do it, then forgot it, and recently had to write it all out properly, arranging from scratch. The fingerstyle version here is in dropped D. I first heard Maria Elena by Los Indios Tabajaros about twenty years ago, that version being in B major.
The second part with two guitars was largely improvised using the amazingly sweet sound of the Paul Colling classical guitar.
