Controling and neutralising the opponent's leading arm is very important because,
1) Wins the kumi-kata battle.
The leading arm usually secures the first dominant grip so
you deny Tori their preferred sleeve/lapel grip
2) Disrupts kuzushi and posture.
The lead arm controls shoulder rotation and upper-body alignment ,so neutralising it weakens balance breaking and limits throwing power.
3) Limits Tori’s attacks.
Most throws rely on the leading arm (hikite) for pulling and direction. If it’s controlled, Tori’s attacks become slower, predictable, or impossible.
4) Improves safety and control when attacking.
Lead arm control reduces exposure to counters (kaeshi-waza) and allows you to attack from a stable, dominant position.
5) Creates direct pathways to scoring throws
Effective lead arm control naturally connects to high-percentage techniques (seoi-nage, sode, ashi-waza), increasing scoring opportunities.
