The idea of protecting large tracts of lands as national parks took off in Africa in 1925 with the establishment of Virunga National Park in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Soon after that an ever-increasing number of parks emerged after the second world war as many other African countries followed suit, leading to the creation of some of the world’s largest national parks. Africa cannotto be the first or have the largest national parks in the world but Africa has some of the biggest parks in the world both in size and wildlife viewing opportunities.

10. Tsavo East National Park – Kenya – 13.747km2
Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 13,747 square kilometres. Situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert it opened in April 1948, and is located near the town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta County of the former Coast Province. The park is divided into east and west sections by the A109 road and a railway. Named for the Tsavo River, which flows west to east through the national park, it borders the Chyulu Hills National Park, and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania.

9. Hwange National Park – Zimbabwe - 14,651km2

It is the largest in Zimbabwe at 14,651km2km, and Hwange National Park has a spectacular amount of wildlife with some 400 species of bird and 107 types of animals.
