The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa provides an enlightening view of life in Sri Lanka's capital city from 1070 AD. to 1310 AD. A number of magnificent monuments were constructed during this period and after the fall of the kingdom, they were hidden from the world until the 20th century.
The Polonnaruwa Vatadage is an ancient structure constructed during the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa and it is believed to have been built during the reign of Parakramabahu I to hold the Relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Nishshanka Latha Mandapaya, Thuparama Image House, Ata Dage, Hata Dage are the other iconic structures adjacent to Vatadage.
The castle of King Parakramabahu I, which is situated few meters away from Vatadage is believed to have nine stories in height.
The archeological excavation work at the Polonnaruwa heritage site began in 1903, and the ruins of these magnificent structures were recovered back,
