Local Anesthesia, Regional Blocks, Pain Management, Part 5.1

This video is an overview of local anesthetics, regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve catheters. I discuss, common local anesthetics, onet of action and duration, such as lidocaine with and without epinephrine, bupivacaine with and without epinephrine and exparel. Next is a glossing over of regional blocks, common locations and surgical indications for regional blocks. Also identifying the important application of regional blocks in ERAS, enhanced recovery after surgery guidelines, to minimize opioid use in the postoperative patient. Nursing application of regional blocks is discussed, planning, assisting with implementation and post-procedure management of a patient after having a regional block. Discussion of LAST, Local anesthetic systemic toxicity, identification and intervention is lightly covered. Then discussion of peripheral nerve catheters and their role in pain management post-operatively.
