Syros, Siros, Syra or Σύρος is an island in the Aegean and part of the Cyclades Islands of Greece. The island of Syros is known as the Pearl of the Aegean Sea. Syros has 22,000 inhabitants and most of them live in the capital city Hermoupolis (also Ermoupoli or Ερμούπολη). Hermoupolis is the largest town of the Cyclades and its capital. During the 19th century Hermoupolis was even more important than Piraeus Harbour. Other villages are Manna, Ano Manna, Chrousa, Vari, Pagos, Finikas, Poseidonia, Azolimnos, Galissas and Kini.

Hermoupolis exists of two parts. Downtown and Ano Syros. Ano Syros (upper Syros) was built by the Venetians in the 13th century and on its top stand the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George. Hermoupolis has many Neo-classical buildings with the Miaoulis Square and the Town Hall, the Opera Theater and the Church of Saint Nicholas as its main attractions. Outside of the town is the majestic Agios Demetrios Church.
