In 2010, a young man with a guitar stepped onto the stage of Tusker Project Fame, the East African reality-singing competition that captivated audiences across the region and beyond, and the region fell in love. He didn’t win the show, but Gilbert Gabiro Girishyaka, popularly known by his stage name Gabiro Guitar, won hearts. His voice, and songs – Koma, Igikwe – resonated far beyond the borders of Rwanda.
But fame, as Gabiro would learn, doesn’t always pay the bills. Life offstage had its own rhythm – quieter, humbler, yet just as demanding. Today, in the rolling rural hills of eastern Rwanda, in Nzige Sector, Rwamagana District, the boy who once chased applause now wakes up to the clucking of chickens and the rustle of banana leaves.
Gabiro did not stop being an artist. He just found another stage — “one where growth takes time, but the rewards are real.” Today, on his seven-acre farm, the 36-year-old raises over 700 chickens, cows, and a banana plantation that yield tonnes every season. What began as a survival project has become a thriving agribusiness — and a sanctuary for creativity.
Here, he still writes, sings, and records — proof that art and agriculture can grow from the same soil. Farming has taught him patience. Just like music, he said, you plant, you nurture, you wait, and one day… you harvest. Now, Gabiro dreams bigger — to inspire Rwanda’s youth, to prove that ownership and creativity can coexist.
From the stage lights to the sunrise, Gabiro Guitar’s journey reminds us that success isn’t just about applause. It’s about growth, peace, and building something that lasts.
